Quiz 4

2) Please refer to the learning outcomes in your syllabus for this class. Did the course meet these outcomes? Were any of the outcomes not met? In answering this question, cite specific course activities or assignments that stand out to you.

After reviewing this syllabus, I have seen that we have covered every learning outcome. We have definitely demonstrated knowledge of political, economic, social, religious, intellectual and artistic experiences of people around the world over time. We began in the Paleolithic Era, and ended in the Post Modern Era. That is a huge gap in time, especially when thinking the Paleolithic Era began 200,000 years ago. To see how far we have come as a species is also very impressive. Not only have we evolved into the humans you see today, but our technology has come very far as well. We began using basic stone tools, and now we have tools that are electric, and cordless. We have come very far in our development. Also seeing how far we have migrated is amazing. We all began by migrating out of Africa, and now there are people all over the world (except Antarctica). We discussed how decisions made in the past continue to shape social and political discourse. This really struck me when we began discussing the last few chapters of the book. We were discussing WW1 and WW2, and the depression, and relating all this destruction to what we see today. We have a president that seems unaware that history always seems to repeat itself, and the arguing he has with the North Korean Dictator has me thinking we just may see another war. Going back to the question, another way this course met the learning outcomes was when we were put in groups and had debates of who's point was wrong and who's was right. I always liked hearing both sides of the debate, and assisting my team with evidence that could stump the other side. I would say that definitely covered the outcome that said to weight and interpret evidence and present a sustained argument supported by historical evidence. The outcome that said to demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate historical knowledge and reasoning orally and in writing was covered when we had the men vs women day. I was always told my great-grandmother had a huge role in women's rights, but that day I felt what she had to go through. The difference is that we had a phone to read aloud our answers, but when we had come to a "dead-end" and were being forced to switch sides the women came together and walked out. I felt like we had made a huge statement at that point, and I was very proud of our movement.

3) In what ways did Modern Western Humanistic Civilization collapse (break down) during the 20th century? Has this collapse been effectively mended?

The Modern Western Humanistic Civilization collapsed when we encountered the following : WW1 & WW2; Holocaust; The Great Depression; Hiroshima; and Fascism. In the WW1 and WW2 people contractually agreed without saying "yes"; there were colonial relationships (one country & all their colonies); and industrialized weapons. During the Holocaust the Nazi's had become very nationalistic, they cared and thought very little for those that weren't like them(the Jewish people). During the Great Depression Capitalism wanted regulation. After Hiroshima we learned that we had become a nuclearized world. And during Fascism(nationalism) we saw that the Nazi's were Nationalistic, and patriotism is positive and nationalism can be very negative. Nationalism is an assertive superiority over people. For example you would be proud, but at the same time think you are better than everyone else. But Patriotism on the other hand is when you are proud of where you came from. From all this we learned there were global institutions of regulation, there were no firm alliances, they realized nuclear war was not winnable and we cannot over punish; or try to filter all the blame on one country or group. When thinking of the collapse, its hard to predict our future. Its unclear what our next step will be, but its not considered "the end of an Empire." With a new takeover, there will always be a negative impact. It would be nice to think of our future world as a peaceful one. But overall I wouldn't say our world had been effectively mended.

4) Are we moving into a new historical era? Do the items listed under “Post-Modern” reflect the world we live in today and the future we seem to be working toward? Why or why not?

I would hope that we are moving towards a new historical Era. I can the items listed under "Post-Modern" as the type of world we live in today except the last one. I do not see us currently recognizing the co-equality of other people. There is still much hate in our world for this to happen. Although there has been many rallies and peaceful protests, racism lives and it is strong. I hope that we can wash this hate away; but I don't see it happening anytime soon. I don't want to keep reflecting on Trump, but with him in charge of our country, we will never see eye to eye. His disgusting words about women and Mexicans is just building a fire for all those that follow him. It seems that since his time in office I have seen more hate against Latino's than I have in years. I remember being in high school and hearing about someone that had passed around flyers threatening to kill all Mexicans that were living in the Mission. But that threat did not go very far, it lasted maybe a month or so, and it died down. But with this crazy man we have in office, I don't suspect it to take long for something like this to reemerge. There have already been videos of Latino's being harassed because of the color of their skin. Its so sad to see what is happening around us, but I do hope that we can one day come to a consensus, and our children and grandchildren will only know of this hatred through history books.
